review: the adventures in the secret valley by Sally Parker Frizzell

“How green was my valley” - Richard Llewellyn

The Adventures in the Secret Valley
Mr. and Mrs. G find themselves parents to eight foundlings. each child has a special gift and share a common attribute. they are all small in stature. their physical differences and undisclosed origins draw the scorn of the people in their village. the kindly parents and their adopted children move out of their old homestead and seek refuge in a secret valley. hidden in the mountains, they establish a new home and life away from the prejudice of the villagers.
The Adventures in the Secret Valley, published by Dorrance Publishing, is the first of a series of stories written by Salley Parker Frizzell for her grandchildren. it details how the family lives and helps each other through the changing of the seasons.
what sets them apart is the role they have to play in overthrowing an evil warlock who placed a cursed on the Indians who used to live in the valley. the good witch Annabel sends talking birds, mice and other creatures to the family to prepare them for the task ahead.
this book is clearly for young readers. parents can read it to them or they can do so on their own. sentence construction is simple and some significant details are often repeated to remind or drive a point. the values of hard work, sharing, hospitality, forgiveness and acceptance are also presented.
there are some twists and turns as well which surprised me.
all in all, a good fun book for young minds!
