03 Orangeberry Book Tours review: something different by S.A. Reid

"So the whole of this dimension, which I had been seeking for a very long time, is now sort of opening itself up to me." - Bede Griffiths

Something Different
in a single night, family man and textbook writer Michael Maguire's life will never be the same again after his encounter with rent boy James Campbell
author S.A. Reid's novella explores a married man's sexual awakening and the changes he has to confront and live with. written with compassion and insight, this story is at times shocking in its delivery and implications yet it could be closer to the truth than most people may realize.
the characters mirror life in all its beauty and sordidness. Michael sounds too good to be true at times but i believe there are people out there who are like him - compassionate, generous, kind and understanding. he is not without fault however. just like the rest of us, he makes mistakes but he knows how to deal with them and move on. James too can be stereotyped because of his profession but he has scruples, is grateful and smart enough to grab at opportunities to better himself.
i also like the way how these protagonists developed as the story progressed. both Michael and James are shaped by circumstances and by those around them. together, they are good and perfect for each other.
i just have a couple of niggles though. one thing that really bothered me was Michael's carelessness and blatant disregard for practicing safe sex early on with James when the latter revealed something concerning his health. this was very scary and i do not agree with the notion that Michael did it out of love. it was a serious matter. it may not have been life threatening but anything that could compromise one's health and well-being should not be taken lightly. another one would be the speed and timetable involved with which James was able to accomplish and get over a disability. i found this part unrealistic to a certain degree.
still, this fast-paced book left me with an overall good feeling that true love does come from unexpected places even if it may be with someone and something totally different.

(warning: for those who are uncomfortable reading about romance or sex between two men, there are graphic descriptions and details involved so be forewarned.)
