50 Bewitching Book Tours review: dark heirloom by J.D. Brown

You did not know that I exist You died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. - Author Unknown, Dear Ancestor

Dark Heirloom
Ema Marx is viciously attacked and becomes comatose for two days. when she wakes up, she finds herself a "guest" in a castle in Lapland, Finland. her hosts are not human and Ema finds out she is not one herself.
author J.D. Brown's first book in the Dark Heirloom series was a delight to read. it is full of novel ideas about vampire genealogies and supernatural abilities specific to a particular clan. i have never read anything like it and i found the author's take on vampires original and refreshing.
initially, the first three chapters were a little strange for me. i was as clueless as Ema regarding the events that were transpiring one after the other. however, from the fourth chapter onwards, everything became clearer and i was hooked!
the fun really begins when Ema discovers who or what she is and learns to develop her preternatural capabilities. her unbelief and acceptance of the changes in her are both fascinating and amusing to read about.
Ms. Brown's supporting characters are also an interesting lot. there is the enigmatic Jesu who becomes Ema's tutor of sorts and his brother Prince Jalmari ta Korento who harbors a deep-seated anger for Ema. then we have Leena, Jalmari's sire and Maria, one of Jalmari's loyal servants. there is also a mysterious black cat who comes and goes and becomes Ema's companion.
overall, i was impressed with the author's fertile imagination and worldbuilding. one of the things that struck me was her description of the underworld. it was simply extraordinary.
Ema's story is far from over and there are obviously more adventures for her to undertake and discoveries to be made. Dark Liaison, the second book in the series, would be something to look forward to.
if you love vampires and want something unique and a far cry from the usual garden-variety type, this book is for you and it comes highly recommended.
