James Dillingham Young and his bride Della have known prosperity but times have changed and life has been hard of late. soon it will be Christmas. Della plans to buy her husband a gift but she has only one dollar and eighty-seven cents left. what could she possibly do to solve this dilemma?
American writer William Sydney Porter wrote this short story using O. Henry as a nom de plume. it was published in a newspaper in 1905 and was included in O. Henry's second collection of stories The Four Million in 1906.
i first read this story many years ago but i have never forgotten its plot, the flowery diction and especially the twist at the end. it was a part of my adolescence and reading it again brings back a lot of memories.
i think this timeless story about sacrifice and love will never lose its charm and its universal appeal. i consider it one of the author's best works and it will undoubtedly remain so for many generations to come.
*The Gift of the Magi is available in print and digital formats. popular ebook versions can be downloaded for free from Amazon, Manybooks and Project Gutenberg. it can be read online as well.
