review: tales from the Arabian nights: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and other stories by Andrew Lang

We are all like Scheherazade's husband, in that we want to know what happens next. - E.M. Forster

Tales from the Arabian Nights
this audiobook begins with a brief introduction on how the tales from a thousand and one nights came about. then, a selection of four stories (Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor and the Story of the Blind Baba-Abdalla) are presented. when it ends, we get to learn what fate has in store for Scheherazade when her nights of storytelling are finally over.
Toby Stephens, English stage, television and film actor, did a wonderful job of bringing these stories to life. his voice, accent and gift of mimicry made listening to the tales such a delightful diversion. i had no difficulty identifying the characters and i never got confused with who was speaking or what action was taking place.
a word of caution though, these stories are not your typical Disney versions. in fact, i was quite surprised with how Ali Baba's servant-girl Morgiana triumphed over the thieves. although she used her wit and cunning, the methods she employed were still violent and the results were horrific.
nevertheless, i enjoyed listening to all four but the one i like best is blind Baba-Abdalla's story and if you are interested, you can read the full text online here.
